THE ROLLER BEARINGS-MADE TO BEAR THE UNBEARABLE
A spherical or cylindrical object that helps in movement of a thing that is bigger in size than the size of the bearing itself, is called as the roller bearing. It is a type of weight distributing bearing. The roller in the bearing is cylindrical leading to contact on a line between the inner and the outer races. This arrangement allows the distribution of weight and thus allows handling the much bigger loads. Such bearing systems make use of the decreased rolling resistance for increasing the efficacy of the moving items.
Types and uses:
Roller bearings do occur in so many different types and sizes. However, we can broadly classify them into three main categories as follows:
Cylindrical type of roller bearing:
These are most common type of bearing in use. These may be spherical or cylindrical in shape, and the design is such consist of the pair of the rings that have bearings in between them. Large amount of the radial load and up to some extent, thrust can be handled by these bearings. Since, these are commonly used in the applications where the objects require gliding along the single plane.
These can be used as differentials; for transmissions and in rare axle type of shafts.
Tapered type of roller bearings:
The construction of these bearings is also similar to that of the cylindrical type of bearings except the cylinders are perpendicular to the very ring as they are offsite and angled. This arrangement gives them additional power for load bearing and also allows quick movement of the bearing.
These are often used in automobile industries and heavy machineries owing to increased load bearing strength.
Needle type of roller bearings:
It is kind of variation of the cylindrical bearings. The difference is in the capacity of roller design. There are morethe rollers per bearing. However, the diameter is decreased. A complete needle bearing has no cage. In this type, one roller works by pushing the other while holding everything in position.
These may be used for transmissions; alterations; and in steering gears or in universal joints.
